Who Played Gloria in All in the Family Pilot

It's been a whopping 50 years since All in the Family unit debuted, just Sally Struthers volition ever be remembered for playing Archie Bunker'south "little daughter," Gloria Stivic. "It feels similar it happened fifteen years ago, but it besides feels similar it happened a 100 years agone," Sally, who won two Emmys for the prove, exclusively tells Closer Weekly, on newsstands at present. "Time is a curious thing, and I can't quite get a handle on how much time has passed."

In the decades since All in the Family went off the air, Sally, 73, became known to a new generation playing Babette on Gilmore Girls. She's as well worked as an advocate for the Save the Children charity and provided voices for animated series, including Dinosaurs and TaleSpin. This divorced mom of an adult daughter still works frequently in theater and other projects, but it's her beloved television roles that fans remember the near fondly. "It'due south funny. Quite often I will get stopped by a family. The female parent will say, 'Oh, we dear y'all on All in the Family,'" Sally shares. "Then the daughter will say, 'No, she's Babette!' It's so funny to see the generational thing happen."

When you were hired for All in the Family unit in 1971, did y'all have any idea the show would modify your life?

About often, performers don't have a clue what the length of a job will be. I had but come off The Tim Conway Comedy Hour. I should take been on all 13 weeks of it, only after the fifth testify, the executives said, "Get rid of that dancer girl. She makes the show look cheap!" And so I was let go.

You must have been upset!

I was distraught! I adored Tim Conway and wondered what would happen to me next. Merely I went to read for this homo nobody knew, [All in the Family unit creator] Norman Lear. He said information technology was the role of the daughter, and he gave me a yelling scene. I had laryngitis that day, so my voice was raspy, but I guess it fabricated him remember me. He narrowed it down to four young ladies, and I was 1 of the final 4.

Do you know who else was up for the role?

Rob Reiner had already been cast as Michael Stivic, and sitting in one of those four chairs was his girlfriend Penny Marshall. I knew they were a couple and thought I didn't stand a gamble. Simply thinking that made the nervousness get out my body, and I went in and did what they asked. And then you know the end of that story.

What did you have in common with Gloria?

Other than being immature and female, I didn't feel like I had a lot in mutual with her. I was built-in and raised in the Pacific Northwest, and Gloria was an Astoria, New York, daughter. I was raised devoutly Lutheran, and Gloria had no faith. I didn't get married until I was thirty, but Gloria married very young. My begetter was a md, and Archie Bunker was a very unproblematic, lower-centre-class, blue-collar, uneducated still lovable guy.

It must accept been a challenge to play her!

Not at beginning. For the beginning five years, the writers didn't know what to do with her. She had about 3 lines per bear witness, which were like, "I'll assist you set the table, Ma," or, "Daddy, finish it."

How did Gloria alter?

Michael expanded Gloria's noesis of the globe, politics and her ability equally a woman. The writers besides eventually gave me more than to do by Gloria having a infant and Mike and Gloria moving next door. They finally wrote stories about Mike and Gloria and gave me some meat. I had been eating salad for five years and I finally got the entrée!

How did the cast go along?

We got along as beautifully as anyone could have ever hoped. There wasn't whatever competition betwixt us. Nosotros all revered one another because it was the perfect casting. Rob and I were the 3rd set of kids — Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton had made two other pilots before we went to CBS. I have never seen those two pilots, just I hear you can discover them on YouTube. People who've seen them say that Rob and I finally had the right chemistry for Jean and Carroll.

What practice you lot call back near fondly almost Jean?

She was my living, breathing, instance of what it's similar to be subtle as a human being — to not have to ain the room, to merely arrive and do the piece of work. To e'er exist prepared and cooperative and positive. A lot of that came from her organized religion as a Christian Scientist. She didn't think or say a single negative thing. That was glorious to be effectually!

And how nigh Carroll?

In 1968, my own father passed away. I was still feeling bad and fatherless when I got this show. Carroll and his wife, Nancy, turned out to be equally parental with me equally he was in the show. Carroll gave me communication, he laughed at my antics, he hugged me all the fourth dimension — and he introduced me to my husband [William Rader]! So I gained a father once more by doing that prove.

When did yous realize All in the Family unit was a big hit?

Rob and I realized it inside a few weeks. We used to walk out the back door at CBS and go over to the farmers marketplace to get lunch. Later a few weeks of All in the Family being on the air, we couldn't become over in that location anymore. We were mobbed!

Do you remember filming your last episode?

Aye. It was emotional, but it wasn't pitiful. I didn't have any thought at the fourth dimension how much I would miss it. Whenever I come across an episode on Television receiver now, I stop for a second, only equally soon every bit I see Carroll or Jean, I get so sorry that I have to alter the channel.

Why are you so proud to have been a part of All in the Family?

I've done so many shows as a guest, and that'due south fun, but All in the Family was history-making and that doesn't happen to too many actors. I knew information technology the day my daughter was in her room writing a written report, using the Encyclopedia Britannica. She screamed from her room and said, "Mom, come in hither!" She had the encyclopedia opened to the letter T on her desk. Under the give-and-take television was a film of the All in the Family cast. That'due south when you say, "Wow!"
